A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
recommended by Liz
Past collides with present in Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being. When Ruth finds Nao’s diary washed ashore amongst other debris assumed to be from the 2011 tsunami in Japan, she is drawn to the Japanese-American teenager’s entries. From being bullied by her schoolmates to finding strength from her great-grandmother Jiko, a Zen Buddhist nun, Nao’s highly personal struggle brings Ruth to care deeply for someone she’s never met. The story alternates between Ruth’s life on the coast of British Columbia and Nao’s life in Tokyo, skillfully weaving together the struggles of the everyday with questions of an existential nature.
Audiobook listeners will have the added enjoyment of experiencing the skillful narration of the author herself.
