Every week, one of our staff or patrons will share a craft or hobby they are passionate about. If you would like to show us the projects you are working on, email us and we will feature you in one of our future blog posts.

This week, Fiona C. talks about jewellery making.

I first began making jewellery around 2006 and it quickly developed into a relaxing and uplifting hobby! The range of beautiful beads and captivating ideas out there are just endless; whether you are looking to learn online, or to visit a local beadstore.

Here are three necklaces that I made. Photographing them made me realize that I haven't worn jewelry for years and have also made nothing either. Time to make some effort!

So my necklaces are super simple. Absolutely beginner stuff, made in half an hour.

Handmade Necklace
Basic wirework with a few pretty crystals, which attaches the polished stone to the satin necklace.
Handmade necklace
Stones (chocolate jasper, amazing name) crimped onto wire
Handmade Necklace
Necklace strung on wire, using both crystals and polished stones, with a couple of stones and rings used as a centre piece.

Tips for beginners:

  • For the beginner, I would suggest not investing a great deal of money and to start small.  I like to visit the website Etsy which has a wealth of great ideas and inexpensive items for purchase. Many of the artists and sellers are Canadian and it is a cool way to support independent, home-based businesses.
  • To start out, try looking for something like an elasticated, beaded bracelet kit, which contains all you need to make a bracelet without requiring any tools.
  • If you already own a pair of needle-nosed pliers plus a pair of small wire cutting pliers, the sky is the limit! Earrings, wire-strung necklaces and bracelets can be made in a very short time.  Just choose a kit which contains beads, wire, good quality metal findings and of course, instructions!

A jewellery kit would be a lovely gift to send to a friend or relative who may be in need of an uplifting small project at this time, or perhaps you have some unexpected time on your hands right now!

Learning resources for beginners:

  •
    • YouTube is a great resource for finding simple tutorials when considering taking up beading.  Try this four-part series one: How to Make Jewelry: Tutorial for Beginners.
    • Jewellery Fantasy (eBook on Library2Go)
A beading book for girls, but a good overview for beginners of all ages.
    • Through the Library's RBdigital, you can download

many crafts magazines

    , including:
    • 52 Bracelets
    • Bead & Button
    • Beadwork
    • The Best of Creative Jewelry
    • Creative Beading

We look forward to seeing photos of some of your wonderful, homemade creations. Email us your project and we will feature it in one of our future blog posts.
