The Port Moody Public Library Board is a governance board which operates under the authority of the Library Act of British Columbia. The Board is responsible for providing library services and programs in Port Moody.

Board members, also known as library trustees, establish the policies, goals, and objectives of the library. They also advocate for the library in the greater community. The day-to-day operation of the library is the responsibility of the Library Director and senior staff.

The Library Board is made up of eight Port Moody residents appointed by Port Moody City Council for two year terms. The Board also has one city councillor appointed for a one year term.

Becoming a library trustee

The position of trustee is a voluntary commitment of service to the community, with no pay or allowances. Library trustees are citizens whom the community has “trusted” to care for its library.

What are the responsibilities of a library trustee?

The following list describes some of the responsibilities of trustees:

  • Maintain an objective and unbiased approach free of conflict of interest.
  • Hire a Library Director to oversee management of day-to-day operations, and evaluate their performance.
  • Regularly attend and participate in meetings of the Board and committees.
  • Attend special events and represent the Library at community functions.
  • Advocate for the Library in the community and represent the community to the Library.
  • Advocate for the needs of the Library with City Council and the provincial government.

If you would like to know more about being a trustee for the Port Moody Public Library Board, please contact the Library Director.

How do I apply to become a library trustee?

Between August and October, check the City of Port Moody website or local newspaper for the notice about applications to City boards, commissions, and committees. This will provide details and deadlines.
