Join the Adult Summer Reading Club at the Port Moody Public Library!

Travel the path of the “Book of Life” and make important life and reading choices as you move from childhood to the teenage years; from working life to a happy retirement. “Book of Life” is like the classic boardgame Life, but with a book-themed twist!

How to join the Adult Summer Reading Club

Get your Book of Life game board and instructions

  • Stop by the Library during opening hours to get your game board
  • Print your own

How to play the Book of Life

  • Start in the childhood stage in the bottom left corner of the game board.
  • Whenever you encounter an orange tile, you decide which path to take. Pick any blue tile on your chosen path and read a book for that category.
  • When you are on a yellow path, pick any yellow tile or the pink question mark tile and read a book for that category.
    • A list of question mark events is available below and on the instruction sheet.
  • We have put together booklists to help you find books that fit the categories you have chosen.

How to enter the Summer Reading Club prize draw

  • Play the “Book of Life” game all summer long. No minimum or maximum number of completed books required.
  • Fill out your prize draw ballot on the instruction sheet and return it to the Library between August 22 - September 6 to enter our prize draw for $100 gift card.
  • You can drop off your ballot in person or email a photo of your ballot to askthelibrary@portmoody.ca.

Book suggestions for the different Book of Life categories

We have put together the following booklists to help you find books that fit the categories you choose.

Childhood: Choice #1

Grow up fast (left turn)

  • Adult book with a child narrator
  • A book published in the decade you were born 
  • Fascinated with words: great book titles 

Stay a child (right turn)

  • Re-read a childhood favorite
  • Book with anthropomorphic animals
  • Book about a childhood passion
  • Curious about everything: Read a new-to-you author

Young adult

  • Coming of age story 
  • Rebellious phase: read a banned book 
  • Cosplay time!: read a graphic novel 
  • Read a book in the Teen collection
  • So many feelings: poetry or novel in verse
  • #BFF: books about friendship
  • You graduated: read whatever you want!

After high school: Choice #2

College (left turn)

  • Book set in a school
  • Non-fiction book on a school subject 
  • Take a break: read a funny book 

Travel (right turn)

  • Travelogue or a book about a road trip
  • Book set in a country you want to visit
  • Waiting for your flight: read a short story

Adulthood (part 1)

  • Learn to feed yourself: read a cookbook
  • Movie night: book adapted into a movie/TV
  • Discover a family secret

Get a job: Choice #3

A Traditional job (left turn)

  • Book set in a office
  • Work in the medical profession
  • Book with a family business
  • Work in retail

An unusual job (right turn)

  • Work in space
