The Spite House by Johnny Compton (print book) This is Johnny Compton's debut novel. It's got all the right horror elements - hauntings, a creepy house, and a fractured family struggling to stay together. There is a mystery at the core of the novel that binds two families together in a quest to understand the Spite House and its long-dead inhabitants, and it's going to cost someone dearly to learn the truth. Natalie is reading this spooky debut novel.
Threads that Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou (print book) In a flooded post-apocalyptic world the descendants of ancient gods wield their ancestors' powers. Forced to investigate a string of terrifying and magical murders, Io Ora, a descendant of The Greek Fates, must navigate the city's darkest corners and face its most vile evils to find the killer and save herself and her sisters. Sadie is reading this fantastical mystery with elements of Greek mythology.
Cat Tale by Michael Hall (print book) Michael Hall's inquisitive cats set out to spend the afternoon snacking and reading, but wind up chasing words, including homophones and homonyms, on a silly tongue twister of an adventure! Evie is reading this fun and wonderfully confusing tale of three cats and the adventures they go on.
Counterweight by Djuna (print book) Conceived by Djuna as a low-budget science fiction film, with literary references as wide-ranging as Joseph Conrad and the Marquis de Sade, Counterweight is part cyberpunk, part hardboiled detective fiction, and part parable of South Korea's neo-colonial ambition and its rippling effects. Al is reading this Korean sci-fi masterpiece.
The Night Travelers by Armando Lucas Correa (print book) Four generations of women experience love, loss, war, and hope from the rise of Nazism to the Cuban Revolution and finally, the fall of the Berlin Wall in this sweeping novel from the bestselling author of the "timely must-read" (People) The German Girl. Thananya is reading this journey of mother and a girl in the night on the street in Germany.
Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson (print book • eBook) When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akinah, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn't fallen into enemy hands. Fallon is reading this fantastic novella set in the world of Sanderson's Stormlight Archive.
