The Starlet and The Spy by by Ji-Min Lee
recommended by Lynn
This book is about the Korean war and survival. After the war ends, most citizens of Seoul still struggle to return to some semblance of normalcy. There is a very unlikely meeting of two vulnerable women. One is a battle-weary Korean translator/spy for the American forces still sanctioned in the city, and the other is the star, Marilyn Monroe, who visits Korea on a USO tour. The two women connect, have an unexpected kinship, and are each changed afterwards by their brief union.
Some parts are upsetting and tough to read, but this fiction novel is based on some dramatic and heartbreaking incidents that actually happened in the Korean War.
