The Sea Keeper's Daughters by Lisa Wingate
The Sea Keeper's Daughter is a fiction novel that spans from modern day back to the 1930's. In 1936, President Roosevelt's WPA (Works Progress Administration) created a plan to document and preserve the natural wealth and common history of the nation called the Federal Writers' Project. Teams of documentarians in each state were to interview and gather the memories, folk legends and lives of the common man, from farmer to factory worker, from Western cowboy to American Indian to former slave and especially underrepresented people. Although this is historical fiction, it parallels the current day work done by StoryCorps.
In the story, the protagonist in modern day inherits a old hotel. While going through the paperwork, she discovers secrets from her grandmother's past. This includes a twin sister she didn't know existed, who was hired as a writer for the Federal Writer's Project to travel, interview and record the history of the people in her state.
That's what I love about historical fiction, you learn about things you didn't know existed and how it is entwined with current day!
An enjoyable read!
