Every week, we will highlight a bookshelf from our staff and patrons in our "Weekly Shelfie" post. Email us your Shelfie and we will feature it in one of our future blog posts.
This week's Shelfie is from Leanne.
Leanne's job at the Port Moody Public Library is to open all the boxes of new books. She's personally handled each and every book in the Library, at least three times, before it's even made it out to the shelves. But what she really loves are old books. Unique books. Colourful books. Books with more than one story to tell.
"I have an enormous book case in my house, and we use it to display all our family treasures. My Nana's cuckoo clock, my Dad's fishing hat, my in-laws' shop radio. And best of all, some of my favourite books!”
As the Crow Flies by Jeffrey Archer
One of his best, and my absolute favourite. It tells the rags to riches story of Charlie Trumper, grandson of a costermonger in London's east end, who dreams one day of running the biggest barrow in all the world. I've read this copy eight or nine times. When it's not on my bedside table, I have it displayed alongside a photo of my great grandparents, who were born and raised in London's east end.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
If you're only familiar with the movie, I highly recommend you pick this up. A classic! My copy is the illustrated edition and it brings to life so many of the best scenes. The Fire Swamp! The Cliffs of Insanity! The Battle of Wits! So good, even typing this paragraph reminds me that it;s time to read it again.
Aria by Nazanine Hozar
I love my autographed copy of this beautiful story, written by my high school classmate. Set against the backdrop of early 1950s Iran, Aria is a historical fiction novel that follows the life of a young girl growing up in pre-revolution Tehran. The characters are fascinating and the story is so well done. Highly recommended.
Anne of Green Gables L. M. Montgomery
My sister found this battered copy in thrift shop in Prince Edward Island. The binding is cracked and pages are falling out, but I love that it looks like it could have been on the shelf in Miss Stacey’s classroom. And there's even a book pocket in the front with due date card. Last checkout was April 23, 1974.
