Every week, we will highlight a bookshelf from our staff and patrons in our "Weekly Shelfie" post.

This week's Shelfie is from Brigette.

A bookshelf full of books

Five books I absolutely love and recommend from my collection are:

  1. Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald
This book was assigned reading for a Gender Studies class I took during undergrad, but (unlike some required reading) I really enjoyed the process of picking it apart. It is layered with beautiful metaphors and difficult relationships, and I think it would be great for fans of The Glass Castle.
  2. The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
This was one of my favourite books as a child. I think I was captivated by the idea of orphans running around without adults in the streets of Venice and creating their own little family to look out for each other. However, what I really love about this one is the surprise ending.
  3. Three Souls by Janie Chang
This is the first book I picked up by Janie Chang and I have eagerly devoured every novel she has ever written. In this one, recently deceased Leiyin is visited by her three souls to look back at her actions and make amends before she can cross over into the afterlife.
  4. The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
This book is very close to me because it reminds me of my mother and the tales she tells me about 'black magic' and the afterlife. It is based on of the Chinese tradition of ghost marriages: living women used to be married to bachelors who had died before getting married to help them pass on in the afterlife. It's a very intriguing read.
  5. Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer
My dad asked me to read this book for many years, but I set it aside thinking there was a slim chance I would enjoy it. I decided to pick it up one day and could not put it down because Jeffrey Archer is an absolute master of cliffhangers and twists. This is one of my favourites and I've been working my way though Archer's other novels since then.

What's on your bookshelves? Email us your Shelfie and we will feature it in one of our future blog posts.
