September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day, take place on September 30 to honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

The Port Moody Public Library will continue to amplify Indigenous voices in the hope that listening to and reading the works of Indigenous authors can help strengthen the path to reconciliation, foster empathy, and pave the way for healing.

We will also strive to find other ways to celebrate the rich culture of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, to acknowledge painful truths, and to work towards reconciliation. We encourage you to do the same.

This past year we welcomed Kung Jaadee on International Indigenous Peoples Day to read from her book and teach us about her language and culture. We have also reviewed and updated our book collection to ensure that books available at our Library include and are reflective of the Indigenous People of Canada.

Book suggestions

Through reading, listening, and learning, we can help ensure that the truth does not stay overlooked. We encourage you to read and seek out Indigenous voices to be more inclusive and informed about Indigenous stories, histories, traditions and worldviews.

  • Seek out different voices and listen to what they have to say
  • Learn about the intergenerational impact and trauma caused by residential schools, the Indian Act
  • Learn about the history of Indigenous and settler relations in Canada
  • Read the 94 calls to action and consider how to make changes based on them

Where can we learn more?

  • Indian Residential School Survivors Society
  • National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
  • Truth and Reconciliation Commission: 94 Calls to Action
  • UBC Residential School History and Dialogue Centre
  • National Film Board of Canada Indigenous Cinema and Documentaries

We hope you will join us as we continue to learn, reflect, and work towards positive change, truth, and reconciliation.
