Colette's love of writing and web development has refocused into a new creative writing direction - blending her love of science fiction with her academic background in geography into a more focused approach to environmental causes. This combined interest resulted in her first book in the Bon Echo Science Fiction Series, Bon Echo and The Competition.

Colette has only been writing for a couple of years, much later in her life, so her answer might be different than most. She is retired and spends a lot of time with her grandchildren. Global warming will be a severe problem they may face when they grow up, and with a lot of free time on her hands, she decided to write a solution-based science fiction book tackling some of the problems of global warming. She loves research, so writing this Bon Echo series has kept her busy and out of trouble.
Her biggest challenge was learning to write fiction. As an indie author, she didn't realize the sheer magnitude of information that this entailed. There has been so much to learn, but at the same time, it has been fascinating and rewarding. Now that she is in the marketing stage for her book, this has proven a fantastic way to reach out to many interesting people who she would never have dreamed of meeting in the past. Writing has been a positive experience every step of the way.

Over the years, she has been very lucky to work with children, youth, and their families who have made incredible progress over the course of therapy. The effectiveness of these strategies inspired her to take the tools beyond the therapy room and reach different households, schools, and mental health offices. Writing a book, a school curriculum, and online resources about these tools was rewarding. Providing access to the general public to helpful evidence-based anxiety management strategies has motivated her to write.
Juggling life and work with writing has been a challenge, as she tends to do many different things at once and sometimes gets overwhelmed. In particular, writing a book for teens was tricky because it had to be engaging, relevant, and applicable to any teen. Another challenge was that Getting Comfortable with Uncertainty was mainly written during the beginning of the pandemic. At that time, both of her children were young and spent a lot of time at home, so she only wrote before sunrise.

Teri finds inspiration for her writing from ordinary things: places she has been, things she has seen or heard, and people she has met. Teri is able to capture the feelings of many experiences she has been through, and subtly weave them into her writing, taking the reader on a journey of discovery. Being able to take an idea and turn it into a story that has feeling and meaning, with a message that people can relate to, is powerful. Words have power. As an author, it is her responsibility to treat words with the care and respect they deserve.
One of the biggest challenges in the process of creating The Angel, the Lion and the Secret of the Waves, was finding an illustrator who could bring to life the visions she imagined for the story. Kezzia Crossley was the perfect match. Her advice to other aspiring writers is: keep looking until you find the person whose work best fits with the story you are telling. You will know when you have found the right fit. As a writer, it can also sometimes be challenging to believe in the work you create. Trust the process.
